Sean spent his earlier years chasing bass, bluegill, pike and carp by spending his summers riding his bike to lakes, ponds and creeks in the Madison area. It wasn't until he moved to Milwaukee for college where he was introduced to the sport of fly fishing. With his first fish on the fly being a smallmouth bass, it is still one of his favorite species to target until this day and has gone from what began as a simple hobby to an outright obsession for all things the sport has to offer.
His passion for fly fishing has been the driving force of his adventurous nature, leading him to explore many of the diverse waters that the state of Wisconsin has to offer as well as been the catalyst for adventures into the western United States helping him become a successful angler throughout his travels.
If there is one thing Sean has learned from his time on the water, its this: "Its not always about catching the most fish, or the biggest, but the kinship you create with nature, others and yourself along the way." Whether its over a morning cup of joe or an after river brew, he is always looking forward to that next connection that brings the people one meets on the river together, sharing stories and creating an overwhelming sense of camaraderie. Spending time with like minded people is what fuels his passion for the sport.
John has been fishing for as long as he can remember. Although he wasn't a fly fisherman all of his life, he was raised by an avid Musky fisherman in the heart of Wisconsin who took him fishing every chance they could get. Making annual trips up north as a young man taught him the importance of being outside, connecting with family as well as everything you possibly can in the natural world and overall, ensuring good stewardship to your environment. Within that he learned to live by one of the most important principles a man can know: "Leave any place inhabited, for even a brief amount of time, the same if not better than you found it."
John was introduced to the fly fishing world in 2012 and learned quickly that actually learning how to catch fish on the fly was not going to be as easy as he thought it was, but being no stranger to hard work, he learned the fundamentals of the sport, and not long to follow began tying flies.
When he started tying, it was something that just kind of came naturally as he quickly progressed learning how to tie a multitude of patterns. One of his late grandfathers had tied flies and built rods which came to light after his own tying began and the inspiration and motivation that resulted from it has coalesced into an infinite form of creative expression and obsession.
Forward Fly Company has been an idea in the works for over a year now. What we're hoping to create is something more than just an idea, but a lifestyle, an experience, encompassing personalized guide services, quality hand tied flies, and the creation of a brand that represents all that we stand for and purvey in our day to day lives.
As much as the material world and technology remain prevalent in, and help enhance our daily lives, we cannot ever dismiss the call of the wild, or the pursuit of subsistence in this wide world of over-abundance we all tend to inhabit more often than not. We encourage you to get out there and join us along the way!
